A living room makeover - two looks!

It no secret - I have a design crush on Kyal and Kara.
You may have seen their home renovation here on the blog before? I love their style, design ideas and their use of texture and colour in their projects.

If I was to leave my own homes design and styling in the hands of a capable couple, it would be them. Watching them on Friday night on the Living Room, I thought that they were clear winners in the styling challenge.

Did you catch it on TV? You can see it here if you missed it.

Kyal and Kara, alongside designer James Treble had the task of styling an oddly shaped living room. Kyal and Kara created a homely space, with a flowing layout, shades of blue, lots of texture in their art and fabrics and a space that felt lived in. It could have been described as a relaxed coastal space.

James Treble created a contrastingly different space. Bold tropical wall paper, teamed with monochrome stripes and neutral coastal furniture - it was overwhelming in prints and colour. I feel too much was going on in a small space.

What are your thoughts of the two looks?
 Do you have a favourite?

I have to show you the before photos, as it is a strikingly different room now.
Before - the living room was an awkward space.

The flooring was kept the same, the walls were painted and new window furnishings were added. It's incredible how much lighter and brighter you can make a space look with white paint isn't it?

James Treble's winning look
A classic monochrome colour palette, however teamed with the wallpaper I feel as though it is too much!

Kyal and Kara's look
Coastal wallpaper, a simple colour palette of grey, blue and white and natural greenery.

Have you ever done a room makeover like this? Turned a room from drab to fab? If you want to update a room in your own home here are three easy things you can DIY on a budget:

- Paint the walls. Fresh white is always a good option to lighten a room.
- Change the window furnishings. Did you notice the old venetian blinds in the before photos? New white blinds and curtains were added. An easy DIY project you can tackle!
- Cover up the flooring. The before photos show plain cream tiles on the floor of this living space. Instead of updating them with new flooring, buy a new rug to cover the floor and also add some warmth to the space.

WHICH ROOM DID YOU PREFER AND SEE AS THE CLEAR WINNER? EVER DONE A ROOM RENO IN YOUR HOME - CHANGED IT FROM DRAB TO FAB?

  1. I watch The Living Room on Friday nights so saw this! My favourite was Kyal and Kara too. James' version was too busy for me. I'm a huge Kyal and Kara fan - love their style! :-)

    1. It was a very busy look wasn't it! Too much going on in a small space! K & K certainly live up to their name of the Super K's. So timeless and chic!

  3. Wow! Those rooms are spectacular. I agree the Treble one has too much going on. I much prefer the coastal one. It's easier on the eye and more welcoming.

  4. 1978 called and wants it's wallpaper back! Definitely prefer Kyal and Kara's version, the other one looks set to cause convulsions!

We desperately need to repaint our walls, we have been living with this horrible yellow-ish colour since we bought the place and I am just about done with it. Now I just need to convince my husband it will be worth the effort of moving the furniture to paint it!
