How to make your bedroom a relaxing haven

This post is written in collaboration with SleepMaker.

Your bedroom should be your haven.
A place to retreat, relax and snuggle at the end of the day. One of my favourite parts of the day is going to bed, snuggling up in my linen sheets and relaxing. I have really made an effort to create a haven in my bedroom that allows me to switch off and be able to relax into a sound and deep sleep. If I have a restless or unbroken sleep it leaves me tired, flat and grumpy the next day.

I thought I would share with you today some of my tips on making your bedroom a haven - a place where you wake feeling rested and rejuvenated.

1. quality linen and bedding

How your bed feels is the most important aspect to a good nights sleep. Your bedding needs to be reflective for the time of year and feel nice against your skin. Recently I purchased a linen sheet set and cannot believe the difference it has made in my sleep. Linen is known to be ventilating, moisture absorbing and great for people with allergies - so perfect for those who sweat in bed or have irritated skin. It also gets softer each time you wash it, which is a bonus as I only have one set and am continuously washing them and putting them back on my bed the same day. You need to ensure your bedding is not too hot or leaving you cold at night and make sure you adjust your bedding to suit the temperature and your environment as the seasons change.

2. Your mattress

There is no point investing in quality linen and bedding if your mattress is old, worn or not suitable for your sleep patterns. Your mattress should reflect your weight, sleep position and your comfort preferences - soft, firm or somewhere in the middle. SleepMaker have a comfort selector to help you choose the right mattress. You simply fill out twelve questions about your sleep preferences and what you are looking for in a mattress and it will find the ultimate mattress for your price range. You can use their comfort selector online or instore. There is a mattress for everyone in the SleepMaker range - mattresses for those who want less partner sleep disturbance, extra support for tired aching muscles and even those designed especially for kids. Your mattress is one of the most important aspects of a good nights sleep, ensure you invest in the best possible mattress for your budget, you wont regret a good nights sleep!

3. indoor plants

Did you know that indoor plants can improve your air quality?
Research has shown that having indoor plants helps remove and eliminate unwanted toxins from elemtns such as cleaning chemicals, plastic. glues, paint and pesticides in your home. I love indoor plants and have them scattered throughout my home. I love the homely feel they create and that I am getting rid of any nasties in the air that I am breathing. I have two plants in my bedroom, a fern that hangs from macrame and a cutting of jade that is kept in a bottle on my drawers.

4. beautiful scents

The way your bedroom feels, through a great quality mattress and linen is important and so is the way your bedroom smells. I have a few different diffusers, candles and essential oils that I place in my bedroom to give it a lovely smell. Try burning a candle and spending a few minutes winding down before you drift off to sleep. Take some deep breathes and even play some soft music in the background if it helps you unwind and melt into a relaxed state.

5. relaxed colour palette

For me, I want a light and relaxing space and that's why my bedroom is very neutral with white walls, furniture and hints of timber and blues through art, bed linen and cushions. Blue for me is a relaxing and gentle colour and I have lots of different shades of blue in my room. Personally for me, colours like red and orange are not colours that relax me and they are not colours I would want in my bedroom. Have a look around your bedroom, what colours are prominent and how do they make you feel? If you rent your home then you may not be able to change wall colours, so ensure your art, bed linen and cushions reflect calming and relaxing colours.

6. gadgets & TV screens

I do not have a TV in my bedroom in my bedroom and have no desire to fill my sacred relaxing space with screens and gadgets. Again, this is a personal preference, you might like snuggling up and catching up on your favourite shows, but I now only associate my bedroom with sleeping. I like that the last thing I see before falling asleep is not a TV. Try removing a few gadgets from your bedroom or limit there use before bed, trust me it makes a difference.

7. declutter

Having too much clutter in your bedroom collects dust, makes you feel overwhelmed and instead of letting your mind and body rest - stimulates you. I am not saying throw everything out - just simplify and declutter. You want to see more white space and surfaces that trinkets in your bedroom, trust me it will make you think clearer and be more restful in this space.

DO YOU SLEEP WELL?

  1. Great tips and I love your bedroom! My bedroom would make you want to rock in a corner! It is the one room in my house that has become a dumping ground and a mega shambles. I plan to tackle it this weekend and I need to buy a new bed because our mattress is worn out. I'll pin this list for future reference :)

  2. I agree with you Ashlea - the bedroom is best kept gadget-free. I don't even take my phone into the bedroom. It is my resting and sleeping place only.

  6. I really need to do more with our bedroom. Its kind of been taken over by toddler toys because she keeps bringing them in each morning. Plus nice things can't be let out anywhere she can reach because she takes them for a walk lol. #teamIBOT

    1. I have heard silk pillowcases are great for your hair too - they don't have you waking up with it all over the shop? Is that right? I have some crazy morning hair hehe x
